Mr Pinky occasionally likes to kick back with a high ball and get his fingers snapping to some of his favourite jazz vocalists. If you’re looking for style and class, you need go no further than Miss Anita O’Day. Her speciality was her witty phrasing and crystal clear diction. Mix this in with her perfect timing and utterly tasteful vocal arrangements, then you’re in jazz heaven.
Luckily for die hard O’Day fans like yours truly there is a video available of a television performance she did for the Japanese in the 1960s. The only flat note in this DVD is the quality of some of the footage – it’s washed out and lifeless. Have patience though, as you get further into the performance the quality does pick up and you can clearly see the great O’Day do her thing.
Just to be able to see O’Day strut her stuff at the peak of her career will be enough to thrill fans. All great singers have their little things they do with their hands and bodies when hitting their notes and trying to fit the lyrics along to the rhythm. Here you will sit gasping as you watch O’Day wave those long gloved arms about while singing her classic tunes.
The good side is that the audio quality for this DVD is excellent. So if you only watch the visuals once, you can use the disc as a CD and listen to Anita over and over.
To see how true style is achieved, rather than today’s lot of brash young things wiggling their butts in front of the camera, then you must lay your hands on a copy of this.
